Inspiration drew first light when returning to Italo Calvino’s 1956 book, Italian Folktales (Fiabe italiane). In a vast collection of 200 traditional Italian short tales, our focus is drawn to story 85, Apple Girl.

The Tuscan fable follows a queen longing for a child, who unusually give birth to an apple, in which a neighbouring king sees and falls in love with.

“… the queen gave birth to an apple, but an apple redder and more beautiful than any you ever saw.”

Embracing themes of beauty, transformation, spells and complete with an evil step-mother, the neighbouring king and new maiden find their happily-ever-after.

“Merrily through life they went,

But were only content

To give one cent

I never spent.”
